Grazing Management Online Course

This open-access short course provides fundamental information on rangeland ecology and management on a flexible time schedule. "Ecology and Management of Grazing" is hosted by the UC Rangelands Research & Education Archive.

The four module course was developed by Dr. Mel George and Cody Sheehy in collaboration with UC Cooperative Extension Livestock and Natural Resource Advisors and University of California and California State University faculty. Course materials were developed with support from USDA Western SARE and RREA.

 

Why Take this Course?

This course will be of interest to staff in government agencies and NGOs who manage local, state, and federal lands—including open space districts, county parks, water districts—and those who conduct education programs on these lands. This course will also be of interest to students who wish to learn more about rangelands and grazing.

Certified Professionals in Rangeland Management and Certified Range Management ConsultantsThis course is approved for 16 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) per Module though the Society for Range Management.

 

Modules, Supporting Resources, and Module Quizzes

This online course is organized in four modules that can be taken separately or in sequential order. Each module includes a 'mini-documentary" to introduce the issues, followed by narrated PowerPoint presentations.

  • Module 1 - Introduction to Ecology and Grazing
  • Module 2 - Foraging Behavior and Livestock Distribution
  • Module 3 - Forage Quality and Grazing Animal Nutrition
  • Module 4 - Ranching and Grazing Systems

 

Continuing Education Units and Certificate of Completion

The Certified Professionals in Rangeland Management (CPRM) and Certified Range Management Consultants (CRM) programs are managed by the Society for Range Management. If you are a CPRM or CRM, then you can obtain CEUs by:

  • Complete the freely available videos, assignments, and quizzes for each module
  • Email ucrangelands@gmail.com to obtain documentation form
  • UC Rangelands will verify and submit documentation to the Society for Range Management

We can also provide a Certificate of Completion to recognize successful completion of each module.
